An Apple Investigation, beginning sound/word sort

In our Second Step lesson we learned about using self talk to help us remember the directions. Carl and ViVian demonstrated just that with several directions I gave them including folding paper and drawing items. In order to be successful with that they had to focus their attention, keep their voice quiet, keep eyes on the speaker. And repeat the direction either in their head or a soft voice.

We broke into groups with different kinds of apples. We had to look at our apple and  determine if it had a stem or not. In our science journal we had to circle yes or no and also write what color our Apple was.  Next we had to take unifix cubes and measure how many cubes tall our Apple was. Then we had to use a balance to see how many cubes our Apple weighed! To help us with our counting, we put them in groups of ten.....our apples were HEAVY!

After our investigation was done, Quinten, from Mrs. Kossman's class brought over an apple with a worm in it!

Hmm how heavy is this Apple?

After we did our investigation, watched a video about apples, and read through our Let's Find Out magazine about apples, we had to write what we knew about apples. This was a chance to show Mrs. Wagner what we learned, but also to let her see how we sound out words and write the sounds that we hear. We will be doing SO much more learning and writing, that even if we could only write the beginning sounds of words... THAT'S OK!

In our writing folders we have an alphabet chart to help us remember what the letters look like in case we forgot. We also have many other places in our classroom to reference.

We can choose if we want to sit at our table spots to write or lay somewhere else in the classroom, the only rule is that we write the WHOLE TIME!

We started a new activity to help us with our letter sounds and building words. We were all given a word sort based on the skills that we need to practice. Some of us are working on letter sounds/beginning sounds of words and some of us are working on sounding out cvc words. We sort pictures and letters and words accordingly.

We like to color the pictures in our sort so that is more exciting!

David is excited that he is able to figure out his sort!

Sometimes we work with partners so that we can help each other!
